Regarding gt-10/x3 live home recording ! ? ?
Im interested to start doing some guitar covers to put on youtube , however i am new to digital recording.I am just playing guitar as instrument.Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
1)What is an audio interface?
2)What is a digital multitrack recorder (Br-600) ?
3)Difference between audio interface and digital multitrack recorder?
4)Is the GT-10/X3 Live able to do recording with just hooking up the usb cables etc. into the computer ?
5)Lastly what would you recomend to get me started?
Thanks for sharing the knowledge once again! I would seek help at local music store but i just have this nightmare when going to the local store : (
1) An Audio Interface is a device that allows you to plug in a musical instrument (guitar, microphone, bass, etc.) into the device that then converts the analog signal to a digital signal that is sent from the device to your computer through the USB or Firewire Cable that then shows up in the Recording Software.
*They all come with a recording software, most of them come with a very commonly used software such as Pro Tools, Cubase, or Tracktion. They have reasonably good quality for the home recording user and is very budget friendly*
2) The BR-600 is a multi-effects pedal with amp modeling, drum machine, and recording capability. Unfortunately it’s not a multi-track recorder, but only a multi-track playback. What that means, is you can’t plug in two instruments and record at the same time, on separate tracks, you can only record one instrument at a time, but playback up to 8 tracks (like a drum track, bass track , etc).
3) An audio interface will allow you to Multi Track record which means that you can record multiple instruments on separate tracks at the same time. What this translates to is, you can record your guitar and vocals at the same time, but have them recorder to individual tracks. This way you can edit / mix / master the vocals separately from the guitar. This comes in handy when wanting to add filters or effects to just your guitar, or just your vocals. It really is the only way to get a quality, accurate recording.
The other thing to realize, is Audio Interfaces are made to record, while Digital MultiTrack recorders like the BR-600 have a lot of other things on it such as amp modeling and effects. This means that usually the BR-600 would have lower recording qualities.
4) Yes. It would work similar to a USB audio interface. Although it would be limited to the Boss / Line 6 software, that is nothing compared to real recording softwares that you’d receive with say an Audio Interface like Tapco Link that gives you Tracktion, or Mbox which gives you Pro Tools.
5) I’d recommend getting an Audio Interface. For 2 reasons. One it sounds like your main goal is to record, so you should get equipment that’s main focus is recording. And second you can still add effects, change EQ’s, and do a lot of cool stuff in recording software that you could or even couldn’t do with effects or pedals.
Looking at your budget, here’s a few I’d recommend going from lowest to highest. Also keep in mind that Firewire Audio Interfaces are better than USB Audio Interfaces because they use the 1094 port on your computer which is faster than USB 2.0 and it in turn causes less latency which translates to higher quality recordings. Thus Firewire Audio Interfaces are more expensive. But worth the price.
Tapco Link USB – $150

Same as above but firewire
Presonus Firewbox – $299

Uses Cubase which is another good recording software
DigiDesign Mbox 2 – $450

This uses Pro Tools. A little overhyped in my opinion, but a quality box and software.
TC Konnekt Live – $400
