Ear Training Hear
Writing what I hear in an Orchestra?

My professor wants me to write what I am hearing in Benjamin Britten’s Young persons guide to the orchestra excerpt. Does he want like.. “I hear a brass section in a certain key. Rises and Falls? I am new in college and have never done much of this ear training. Can someone help
?

Back in my college days, these types of assignments required active listening and introspection. Basically your thoughts on what the composer was trying to express through the various instruments soloists and sections.

Unless it’s an ear training class I think that the key of the music is irrelevant. What would be important, however, is if there is a modulation … either to a different key or different mode (major to minor) … and why the composer would chose to do that. There is a lot of dynamic structure to the music as well. explain how different instruments are louder or softer than others, and the general sound shape of the music.

Are you using a particular recording of YPGttO? If there is not a universal recording for the class you can speak to particular conductor/orchestra of the recording you chose to listen to. You might be able to do that with common class material as well.

I’ve done a metric ton of these, and it seems like they were evenly divided for scoring language arts skills. (English, grammar, punctuation, outlining, structure, and flow) and to evaluate where you were in your ability to find nuances in the music.

The Benjamin Brittan is going to be straight forward. Stings are strings, winds are winds, percussion is percussion … there isn’t a whole lot of interplay between the sections either. In this clip with Michael Tilson Thomas and the LSO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kR9nDnyIhAU at :25 you could talk about the interaction between flute, oboe, and bassoon … at :48 the theme moves from woodwinds to brass, starting with the french horns then trumpet …

… expand on it to your hearts content.
